What Is It About Holidays Which Messes Up My Normal Sleep?

By | August 21, 2010

I tend not to sleep well when I go away on holiday, and this year has been no different. A wrong booking saw me exhausted at 1 am in the morning, and finally close to a bed where I could be asleep at last. No sooner had I sat on the bed than it broke.

I wasn’t expecting that. Perhaps I should not have been surprised because it was a camp bed and it looked a bit on the flimsy side as well. Strange how we humans can rationalize events afterwards but are not so good at doing it before they happen.

The first night in a strange bed in unfamiliar surroundings always messes up my sleep. I really need my sleep as I do find it hard to function normally without enough of it. Gradually I was able to adapt to the different bed and surroundings, and sleep became easier each successive night. I can even adjust to noise. My room had some kind of electrical extractor right outside the window. That was noisy at various times of the day, but it didn’t seem to bother me much, mainly, I believe, because the noise was not too loud, and was constant.

One sleep tip I can recommend is not leaving it too late at night before taking your last meal of the day. I did eat later than I am used to on this holiday and I am sure it stopped me going to sleep at my usual time. I am used to having no food for at least four hours before going to bed at night. Another good holiday sleep tip is to use a night sleep mask and ear plugs, as it would have helped me to block out the noise.

I hope in some way that my experiences help you to get a better nights sleep, especially while on holiday.
