Tom’s Sleeping Problem And An Appointment With A Sleep Specialist
By sleepy | December 26, 2011
My friend Tom has a long term sleeping problem and when he sees me he often asks me how to stay asleep, in other
words how do I manage to stay asleep. That’s because when he does manage to drop to sleep it’s only a light sleep and he tells me he frequently wakes up during the night.
Because he has difficulty sleeping and this problem has been going on for several years I suggested to him that he make an appointment with a sleep specialist. He has tried many sleep tips to try and get a good night’s sleep but they don’t work for him, hence the visit to the sleep specialist.
If anyone can give him help with sleeping it is going to be the sleep specialist. I firmly believe this. I had reasoned with him that specialists in sleep know what they are talking about and if he wanted to stop being always sleepy the best thing to do was to make an appointment as soon as possible. Sometimes sleeping problems don’t go away, and his hasn’t, then its time to seek professional help.
He told me that during a typical day he is always sleepy due to his sleeping problem. He falls asleep in the first half of the night then his sleep pattern tends to be disrupted during the second half of the night, and this sleep pattern is typical he told me. The question of how to stay asleep is vital to him and is one that he desperately needs to be answered in a positive way. He told me he never knows how he is going to sleep tonight.
I can really sympathise with someone who has a sleeping problem especially one which doesn’t get any better with time. You can only do so much self help on your own by following the many common sense sleep tips and if you aren’t getting anywhere, as Tom isn’t, then what he is trying obviously is not working.
I am confident the sleep specialist will give Tom all the help he can to overcome his difficulty sleeping and hopefully that will give him the rest he desperately needs and then we are hoping his health will be improved after that. Being sleepy all the time doesn’t do anyone any good and in the end it takes its toll on the health.
He is quite a fit, athletic man with a responsible job, and he has tried many of the online sleep tips to do with exercise, diet, meditation techniques, various sleep pillows, sleeping on the side, preparing in advance for going to bed, and so on, all without success so far. My contribution has been to try and get him to relax before going to bed, in order to give him the best possible chance of getting to sleep quickly as soon as the bedroom light goes out.
Would’nt you think when you live in a house where there is no background noise at night, so nothing to keep him awake, then he would’nt need any help sleeping. Not so. It doesn’t work like that, and there is obviously more involved than peace and quiet outside the bedroom. Tom’s sleeping problem makes me realise how lucky I am in being able to enjoy a good nights sleep most nights, and also to realise how people are so different in their make up and personality. I am no sleep specialist, and I’d rather leave the analysis to the professionals.
Despite being at home during the holidays, Tom told me yesterday he continues to experience difficulty sleeping, and his sleeping problem doesn’t seem to want to go away. He is at home with his family and feels tired all the time, falling to sleep in the chair for short periods of time sometimes, but not sleeping properly in bed at night time.
I sincerely hope his appointment with the sleep specialist does have a positive outcome, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that he is only a short step from overcoming his sleeping problem.
