My Friend Tom’s Sleep Problems

Sleep Problems At Christmas

Tom tells me he is sleeping quite well at the moment, although over the Christmas break he told me he was unable to sleep at night and he had trouble staying sleep as well. So he was having the two sleep problems together. He asked me if I thought his sleeping problems at this time of year were related to the rich and plentiful diet he was enjoying over the festive period. Because it is Christmas many people often eat and drink more than they should and if you do this it can impact on the quality of your sleep.

Anyway, in Tom’s case it turns out to have been a short term difficulty and he’s sleeping alright now. That was the last I heard from him, although every night is different and he can’t predict how he will sleep tonight. My own pattern of sleep is good compared with Tom’s and I really feel for him when he has been unable to sleep at night. He does his best to practise healthy sleeping habits and helps himself as much as he can, then the rest is up to nature.

I think it helps him when I talk with him about the causes of his sleeplessness because even though I am not qualified to help him professionally I can at least bring common sense to the table, with my own sleep experience to offer him and he has told me it has helped him and that makes me feel good about it. Natural sleep is such a gift that when we lose it we realise how precious a gift it really is.

What I find encouraging about Tom’s sleep problems is that they aren’t consistently bad, and at least there are good nights sleep mixed the bad ones. We just want more of the good ones, hard as it is to achieve. He has many of the remedies to fall asleep that you find on websites, including this one, so he can try these if he has trouble sleeping, but there are no guarantees no matter what sleep aids he tries.
