A few hours passed by and I tried the usual natural sleep tricks, to no avail. My problem was the I was out of routine, and had a headache to boot, which I could not shake off. Finally, I turned on the radio and found myself listening to an interesting programme about the growth of the Indian economy over the last thirty years.
Listening to the radio, and with the passing of time, I eventually dropped off to sleep. Thank goodness for that, and I slept through until my normal waking time.
Here’s What I Learned
That’s a brief outline of what happened but what did I learn from this about getting to sleep? That’s the point of the blog, to help others, and myself, to fall asleep fast. What works for me might not work for you, but here’s what I did. I recited an ancient prayer called “The Jesus Prayer”, to myself, many times.
If you don’t know what The Jesus Prayer is, you can read about it here, and there have been several enlightening books written on the subject. The prayer itself goes back hundreds of years. So it has been used successfully by many people over the centuries.
The two ways it helped me are that it interrupts the flow of continuous thought, and the name of Jesus heals, in my case the headache.
It is not a sure fire way to get to sleep. It is enshrined in the Christian faith, Greek Orthodox I believe, and is a prayer which can be repeated over and over again. I don’t want to get into too much depth about it here. The many books on the subject explain it much better than I ever could. But, for me, I am sure it helped me get to sleep last night.
