I can’t stress how important it is, in the cause of getting to sleep quickly, of clearing the mind of as many distractions as possible before switching out the bedroom light. We are all, to an extent, addicted to one form of technology or another. Watching, listening, waiting for a response, etc., etc, from what is after all, an inanimate object that happens to be the latest technological gadget.

On the face of it, there is nothing wrong with that, as long as it does not interfere with our sleep. Gadgets have a novelty value, and those of us who buy them can easily justify the reason why we bought this or that latest model. The problem is, do we know the point where we ought put the gadget down and go to sleep? This is where the addiction element can rear its head. Addiction in any form, not just in regard to technology but in other areas as well creeps up on us unawares. Quite often it takes others to point out the addiction to us.

Before you know it, it has grabbed you. That is when it can start to stop you going to sleep as quickly as you should. So what can be done about this problem? Simply to come to the realization that sleep and your gadget do not go well together at bedtime. Ask yourself which is more important, a good night’s sleep or staying awake that bit longer to satisfy a perceived need.

It therefore comes down to self discipline. Leave your gadget outside the bedroom and keep your bedroom for sleep only. Make that clear a line of demarcation. The bedroom is for sleep only. The point is, when you try to go to sleep you want your mind to be calm and restful. You do not want a mind which is wide awake and has yet to slow down, because that takes time to achieve. You should be getting into bed having already wound down mentally to give yourself the best chance of getting to sleep quickly.

Respect your body and your health, and acknowledge that you need a good night’s sleep each and every night. Do what you can to make this happen. There are various techniques and methods discussed elsewhere to help you. There are surely enough distractions without adding to them by clinging onto a techie gadget longer than we should. Just tell yourself it will still be there for you in the morning.
